Château Martet is located in Eynesse, in the Saint-Emilion region. It is a 33-hectare property along the Dordogne River. Chateau Martet produces wines in the Saint-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, a very small appellation of 280 hectares.
In 1991, Patrick de Coninck and Albert Michiels bought this magnificent property built in the 13th century. At that time, it was a guest house of the Templar Order for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. Between 1993 and 2006, the vineyard of Château Martet was completely restructured thanks to the uprooting of certain grape varieties and to gain in quality rather than in quantity. From 1998 on, Patrick de Coninck worked with Louis Mitjavile in the cellar and in the vineyard. 2016 marked the death of Patrick de Coninck and the cuvée La Fierté de Mon Père was elaborated in his honor, it is also a real success that makes Chateau Martet known. In 2021, Nina Mitjavile joins the team and helps to perpetuate the family tradition of this Bordeaux château.
The soils of Château Martet are mainly clay and limestone and composed of iron-rich gravel on the higher slopes. The climate is temperate with continental influences, which allows us to obtain good ripeness, which is controlled plot by plot. The harvest is also carried out in several stages in order to adapt to the rhythm of the vine. During the 90’s, the equipment of the winery was modernized in order to produce wines of superior quality. Among the environmental commitments of Château Martet is the HVE3 certification, which means that pesticides and chemical fertilizers have been banned from the vineyard. Martet remains as non-interventionist as possible when it comes to the use of treatments against diseases.
Chateau Martet produces five different cuvées, which offer prestige, pleasure, freshness and elegance. They reflect their terroir and their appellation, which they highlight, but they also reflect the passion that reigns at Château Martet. The exceptional Château Martet Réserve de Famille deserves a mention: it is the emblem of the estate. This 100% Merlot is aged for 18 months in new barrels and shows a smoothness rarely seen in Bordeaux wines. The suppleness and finesse of this wine are exceptional, and it is easy to understand why it has made the reputation of the Château.
