PIC SAINT LOUP

The Pic Saint-Loup appellation covers 5000 hectares, spread over 17 municipalities north of Montpellier. This preserved place is rich in cultural heritage, a history that is passed on from generation to generation, as well as wild landscapes. The appellation has a variety of soils: hard and tender limestones, scree, marl, etc. This promotes drainage and water retention. Deep and filtering, soils provide sufficient water to the vine to grow.

Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are the king varieties of Pic Saint Loup. Syrah flourishes more and more on the terroir of Pic Saint Loup, bringing its spices to the red and rosé wines of the appellation. It is complemented by the texture and roundness of the Grenache. Finally, the Mourvèdre gives power and personality to blend. The wines of Pic Saint Loup thus have a nice structure, panache and a very interesting aging ability. Carignan and Cinsault, complementary varieties of the appellation, are added to the blends of Pic Saint Loup wines. Red wines concentrate 90 % of the production.

The Pic Saint Loup appellation is located on the foothills of Cevenols, so continental climate meets the Mediterranean climate thanks to the proximity of the coastline. There are beautiful thermal amplitudes favourable to viticulture. During veraison, these promote optimal ripening of the grapes: they gain wealth and balance in the wines of Pic Saint Loup. Summers are hot and dry, spring cool, while autumn and winter are very often cold and rainy. The relief also allows the Mistral and Tramontane to sweep the vineyards, thus preserving it from diseases and moisture. It also protects it from bourass that could damage the ceps.

A few well-known estates have made their place among the wines of Pic Saint Loup: Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup, Mas Bruguière, Domaine de l’Hortus, Clos Marie...
