Saint-amour

Saint-Amour is one of the crus of Beaujolais, produced exclusively as red wine from Gamay. It is the northernmost of the ten Beaujolais crus, centred around the village of the same name, on the border between Saône-et-Loire and Rhône.

The northernmost cru of Beaujolais

The Saint-Amour vineyards mark the geographical transition between Beaujolais and the Mâconnais, which explains why its soils are somewhat more varied than those of neighbouring crus: granite dominates at the surface, alongside pockets of limestone more reminiscent of southern Burgundy. This proximity to the Mâconnais can give Saint-Amour wines an elegance and finesse that contrasts with the more powerful character of neighbouring crus such as Morgon or Moulin-à-Vent.

A name that has helped build its reputation

It is difficult to talk about Saint-Amour without mentioning its name, which has become a selling point in its own right around Valentine's Day. Beyond its romantic appeal, however, the appellation produces wines with a distinctive identity: a relatively pale ruby colour, aromas of red berries such as strawberry, raspberry and cherry, and a supple tannic structure that favours immediate drinkability rather than power. Some cuvées, particularly those made from old vines or better-exposed vineyard sites, offer greater concentration and can develop well over several years.

Among the winemakers showcasing the fruity, elegant character of the appellation are Jean-Paul Brun at Domaine des Terres Dorées and Christophe Pacalet, two well-established Beaujolais producers.

How to choose and pair Saint-Amour

Saint-Amour is a natural match for roast poultry, simply prepared red meat or a cheese platter, with a structure that complements rather than overwhelms the food. It is best served slightly chilled, at around 14-16°C. Classic cuvées generally require no decanting, as their light tannic structure allows them to show their full character as soon as the bottle is opened.
