Château Carbonnieux is one of the large and old wineries of the Bordeaux region. The Carbonnieux wines are classified in Grands Crus de Graves and are produced in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on 170 hectares, 92 of which have a single holding around the castle.
Chateau Carbonnieux takes its name from the family “Carbonius” also called “Carbonnieu”, which allegedly cultivated land located in Leognan in the 13rd century. In the 17th century, the Feron family entrusted the lands of Carbonnieux to the Benedictine monks of Sainte Croix. The next century, it was said that Thomas Jefferson in person made a stop at the Château Carbonnieux to taste this nectar. The castle was also sold as a national property for several hundred thousand pounds. In 1956, the Perrin family acquired it and today the 4th generation is in charge of the Carbonnieux property.
Château Carbonnieux is labeled HVE (High Environmental Value) and a quarter of its vineyard follows an organic program while maintaining a reasoned agriculture for the remaining plots. This requires a genuine and committed approach: sorting and recycling waste, replanting and monitoring in and around the vineyards, seasonal work, natural, organic and mineral fertilisers and set aside. Carbonnieux is committed to the conservation of biodiversity and its exceptional terroir. As a result, he was awarded in 1953 and 1959 in the Graves classification: Chateau Carbonnieux white and red were both rewarded!
Let’s start, if you will, with the White Chateau Carbonnieux, which is an almost legendary wine. It is said that in the 18th century, the Constantinople Sultan tasted it under the name “Carbonrous mineral water” and challenged the Koran. He enjoys himself as young for its freshness and intense fruitiness, as well as after a few years for more aromatic complexity and will find its place on a gourmet meal. As for the Château Carbonnieux red, suave and harmonious, it remains a timeless of the Bordeaux region. Grilled notes remind us of its ageing in French oak barrels, its slightly mineral character and its silky texture have conquered us.
