Michel Couvreur whisky is a benchmark for lovers of exceptional spirits. Michel Couvreur is a Belgian enthusiast based in Burgundy, originally a wine producer and merchant. Each bottle, carefully selected and aged, embodies a subtle alliance between tradition and innovation, making Michel Couvreur whiskies a unique sensory experience. He specializes in unusual whiskies produced using artisanal methods.
In 1956, Michel Couvreur acquired the Molet cellars in Bouze-lès-Beaune before travelling to Scotland to learn about whisky-making. This Belgian enthusiast, specialized in whiskies aged in sherry and port casks, set up his own distillery in 1978. He began distilling in 1986 in Edradour. Michel Couvreur was incorporated in 1990 in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire. A visionary and perfectionist, he aged his whiskies in Burgundy cellars. After his death in 2013, his daughter Alexandra and son-in-law Cyril Deschamps, supported by cellar master Jean-Arnaud Frantzen, carry on the legacy of the house, remaining faithful to his quest for excellence.
Michel Couvreur never mentions the distillery's origin on his labels, even though he believes that 90% of a whisky's quality lies in the cask rather than in distillation. Aging is an art mastered by the cellar master, who uses different areas of the cellar, from the driest to the wettest, to find the perfect balance. His 150-metre Burgundy cellar, dug into the rock, provides ideal conditions for maturation. Each cask is individually monitored and each bottle hand-cared for. Each Couvreur Whisky comes from a meticulous selection of Andalusian Pedro Ximenez or Oloroso casks. He has also experimented with importing water from Scotland's Loch Katrine and cultivating the ancestral Bere Barley variety. His vision continues to inspire the company, which is also exploring new horizons with French whiskies.
Recognized as one of the finest single malts, Michel Couvreur whisky is distinguished by its great complexity, long finish and voluptuousness. The range offers a wide variety, from young spirits like Clearach, to classics like Overaged (12 years), as well as rare single casks like Very Sherried (over 25 years). Michel Couvreur offers mainly Scotch whiskies, mostly single malts and blends, all aged in sherry casks in his cellars in Burgundy. His flagship whisky, aged for 12 years, is a blend of 54 Scottish malts, enriched by cuvées such as Intravagan'za and Pale Single.
