Château la Bessane

Château La Bessane is a small Bordeaux wine estate located in the commune of Cantenac, within the Margaux appellation. It was taken over in 1993 by the Cazeneuve family, owners of Château Paloumey in Haut-Médoc. The vineyard covers around 2.4 hectares, making it one of the smallest estates in the appellation, and is entirely dedicated to red wine.

A distinctive blend within the appellation

What really sets Château La Bessane apart from its Margaux neighbours is its proportion of Petit Verdot, a grape variety usually used in small quantities in Médoc blends. Here, it accounts for a significant share of the vineyard alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, an unusual feature in an appellation where Cabernet Sauvignon generally dominates. This strong presence of Petit Verdot brings colour, firm tannins and genuine ageing potential, while giving the wine a spicier profile than the average classic Margaux.

Gravel terroir in the commune of Cantenac

The vines are planted on gravel ridges mixed with pebbles and clayey sands, the poor, free-draining soils typical of the Médoc that encourage the roots to grow deep in search of water and nutrients. Cantenac, home to several Grands Crus Classés from the 1855 classification, shares this geological foundation with some of the most renowned estates in the Margaux appellation.

A generous and structured wine

The resulting wine has a deep colour, aromas of black and red fruit accompanied by notes of liquorice, and a smooth, full-bodied and dense palate. It is aged for around twelve months in barrels, refining the tannins while preserving the freshness of the fruit. This generous yet elegant profile has earned the estate several favourable reviews from the specialist press, along with a reputation for offering excellent value for a Margaux.

How to enjoy Château La Bessane

This wine is best served at around 17-18°C with shoulder of lamb, beef fillet or a soft cheese such as Brie. Its tannic structure, driven by the Petit Verdot, means it benefits from being opened a little in advance to allow it to express itself fully.
