This Italian liqueur, Italicus, is made from bergamot, a citrus fruit native to southern Italy, characterized by its acidic yet bitter notes, to which citron, lavender, chamomile, rose and gentian are added.
Italicus is a trendy, citrus-flavored aperitif that revives the traditional rosolio, an Italian liqueur made from flowers and spices infused in alcohol. This premium, low-alcohol spirit highlights local aromatic plants such as Sicilian citron and Calabrian bergamot, distilled with lavender, gentian and yellow rose in a family-run distillery near Turin.
The sommelier info
The nose of this Italicus liquor reveals notes of citrus, lavender and rose, while on the palate it offers fresh citrus, slightly bitter and floral flavors, with a complex, lingering finish.
The term “Rosolio” comes from the Latin “ros olis”, meaning “morning dew”, as farmers harvested the ingredients for its manufacture early in the morning, when the concentration of aromas was at its peak and the crop was still covered in dew.
Before the emergence of vermouth and amaro in Italy, Rosolio was the drink of choice to welcome the King of Savoy, and was often served as Aperitivo di Corte.
Gallo Giuseppe, Italicus' creator, shares that “childhood memories of the incredible flavors discovered on the Amalfi coast fueled his imagination. Inspired by his passion for Italian art, poetry and history, he created a product that he believes showcases the best of Italy in liquid form.”
