Domaine Santa Duc extends on 21 hectares of vines grown in organic farming. Overlooking the Dentelles de Montmirail, Santa Duc produces some of the most recognised wines of the Gigondas appellation and the Rhône Valley.
The wine estate name “Santa Duc” comes from the Grand Duke owl that lives in the region. Since 1874, 6 generations have succeeded at Domaine Santa Duc and have succeeded in raising it to the rank of the greatest Santa Duc Gigondas even though it was already known for its red wines since the Gallo-Roman era. In 1985, Yves Gras took over the torch of his father Edmond and made wines known internationally. He also buys plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to diversify its terroir. Benjamin later took over the direction of Domaine Santa Duc. The work of the Gras family is now recognised worldwide.
The keyword is the RESPECT that guides Yves Gras’s decisions in Santa Duc. He sees the plant as a living being in balance with its environment: Biodiversity, Biological and Biodynamics are required to develop Santa Duc Gigondas. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault grape varieties are grown on two soil types, maintaining biodiversity through organic farming. The intervention is minimal to make Santa Duc wines, bottling is done without filtration, the harvest is whole and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts.
The wines of Santa Duc are renamed, especially those in the Gigondas appellation, such as the Cuvée Tradition, as well as the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But this Domaine also expresses its know-how through other appellations such as Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, Rasteau, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse. Domaine Santa Duc produces red wines of character. The Gras family seeks to reveal great wines through their purity, depth and elegance. The most famous Santa Duc’s wine remains the cuvée Les Hautes Garrigues, by its power and balance.
