Shipping informations

Clos des Papes White is one of those rare white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that it would be a shame to regard solely as wines to be drunk young. Six grape varieties co-fermented, no oak ageing and six months on the lees allow the estate to develop the wine’s complexity without masking its character. This vintage offers a particularly appealing balance between body and freshness, with considerable finesse already evident but, above all, remarkable ageing potential for lovers of great Rhône whites.

The sommelier info

The nose of this Clos des Papes White combines white flowers with yellow fruits, fresh pear and citrus. As it opens up, more herbaceous and aniseed-like notes emerge, reminiscent of wild fennel, accompanied by a mineral quality that lends it great distinction.

The palate is full-bodied, yet the vintage retains remarkable freshness. The texture is smooth without becoming heavy, supported by acidity that stretches the wine and gives it great length. The finish is persistent, pure and mineral, with a balance that suggests particularly interesting development in the bottle.

The decision to age the wine exclusively in tanks, without any time in oak, is a key element of its identity. White flowers, pear, citrus, fennel and mineral notes are thus expressed with great purity in a white wine that is at once full-bodied, elegant and particularly suitable for ageing.

This wine is served with

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape White pairs beautifully with roast lobster, turbot in beurre blanc, wild sea bass, scallops or Bresse poultry in cream sauce; serve it at around 11 to 12°C and open it one to two hours in advance whilst it is still young, to allow its aromatic complexity and texture to fully develop.

The domain

Clos des Papes is part of the history of wine by winning the prize for the best red wine with its Châteauneuf du Pape vintage 2005, by The Wine Spectator in 2007. A consecration for Paul Avril and his families, who have been working for years for the appellation.

CLOS DES PAPES IN CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE, THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EMPIRE

Since the 1600s, the April family has resided in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was in 1896 that the first vintage came out, produced by the great-grandfather of Paul-Vincent Avril, the current owner of the premises. Clos des Papes brand was registered in 1902 and it contributed to the creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1936. Years later, Régis Avril, helped his son Paul, will increase the reputation of the estate with the service of their wine at the Elysée to the General de Gaulle and then under the mandate of Pompidou. The export of wines abroad contributed enormously to making known these Châteauneuf du Pape with flavors inspired by Burgundy. Indeed, Paul-Vincent Avril decided to draw inspiration from his studies in oenology in Dijon to follow the path of finesse and freshness in the Rhone Valley.

THE TERROIR EXCEPTIONAL OF THE CLOSING OF POPES, WHERE MAGIC WORKS...

The 40 hectares of the Clos des Papes are divided into 24 plots, some of which are well known to all like La Crau, for example. This bite allows a great mastery of the maturity of the many grape varieties: Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin and the traditional Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah as well as 3 hectares for white wines with Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Clairette and the Marsanne-Roussanne duo. The vineyard of Paul Avril is certified in organic farming and the practices are rigorous with vines as in the cellar of Clos des Papes with manual harvests, a severe sorting of the harvest as well as an ageing in oak lightning from 12 to 15 months.

CLOS DES PAPES, HISTORIC CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE WINES

Clos des Papes produces about 65,000 bottles of Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge and 8000 bottles of Châteauneuf du Pape blanc each year. A production therefore confidential and very sought after, in fact each vintage is up to the expectations with fine, balanced and very intense red wines. Paul Avril’s whites are usually fresh and elegant. We always remain in the correctness and control of the farms, which turn out to be more and more precise over time.
