The vineyards follow the course of the Rhône from the southern Loire department to the northern Ardèche and Drôme, covering 298 communes between Vienne and the foothills of the Vercors.
This PGI shares its terroir with prestigious appellations such as Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, but without the same regulatory constraints. This gives winemakers greater freedom to blend and experiment, allowing them, for example, to replant old native grape varieties that had long fallen out of favour, such as Dureza. The predominantly limestone and granite soils benefit from warm days and cool nights towards the end of the ripening season, helping preserve the grapes' aromatic freshness despite the region's generally southern climate.
Syrah dominates the production of red wine, often vinified on its own or complemented by small amounts of Gamay or Merlot depending on the area. The resulting reds are fleshy and generous, with mineral notes and red-fruit aromas, offering an easy-drinking style intended more for immediate enjoyment than long-term ageing. Rosé wines, made from the same grape varieties, focus on freshness and vibrant fruit. For white wines, three varieties dominate the appellation: Roussanne, Marsanne and above all Viognier, producing wines that combine freshness with floral aromas and notes of white and yellow fruit, sometimes accompanied by subtle toasted notes when barrel ageing is used.
Many renowned Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu producers also make an IGP Collines Rhodaniennes cuvée alongside their wines from these prestigious appellations. This is the case with Domaine Stéphane Ogier, whose Blanc d'Ogier cuvée blends Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne in a style that already reflects the estate's expertise, at a considerably more accessible price than its Côte-Rôtie wines. The same approach can be found among several producers in the region: the PGI allows them to create approachable wines, often from a single grape variety, designed for immediate enjoyment rather than requiring the patience associated with more strictly regulated appellations.
A Syrah red is a natural match for grilled meat, a good cut of beef or spicy dishes, thanks to its supple structure and generous fruit. A Viognier-dominant white works well as an aperitif, with tapas, or at the table with poultry in a creamy sauce, fish in pastry or fresh cheese. Rosé is a straightforward choice for summer, served well chilled with lighter dishes.
Red wines are best served at around 15-16°C and generally require no extended decanting due to their relatively soft tannic structure. Whites are best served chilled, between 10 and 12°C, particularly barrel-aged cuvées, which benefit from a little air to open up fully.
