Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Red is a wine that has a lot of freshness despite its generosity and aromatic persistence. Raspberry and cherry as well as spices are present and come with silky tannins. Notes of licorice complete this complex and intense frame. It’s a big yes for this wine concocted by Paul Avril!
The sommelier info
This Chateauneuf du Pape by Clos des Papes announces once again a great vintage, with great presence and elegance. However, there is less power than on the previous vintage, while keeping a wine on the fruit.
This cuvée is made from vines aged 30 years on average. An ageing of 12 to 15 months is carried out in lightning, without new wood. This wine produced by Paul Avril is a work of art, we want some more!

CLOS DES PAPES IN CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE, THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EMPIRE
Since the 1600s, the April family has resided in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was in 1896 that the first vintage came out, produced by the great-grandfather of Paul-Vincent Avril, the current owner of the premises. Clos des Papes brand was registered in 1902 and it contributed to the creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1936. Years later, Régis Avril, helped his son Paul, will increase the reputation of the estate with the service of their wine at the Elysée to the General de Gaulle and then under the mandate of Pompidou. The export of wines abroad contributed enormously to making known these Châteauneuf du Pape with flavors inspired by Burgundy. Indeed, Paul-Vincent Avril decided to draw inspiration from his studies in oenology in Dijon to follow the path of finesse and freshness in the Rhone Valley.
THE TERROIR EXCEPTIONAL OF THE CLOSING OF POPES, WHERE MAGIC WORKS...
The 40 hectares of the Clos des Papes are divided into 24 plots, some of which are well known to all like La Crau, for example. This bite allows a great mastery of the maturity of the many grape varieties: Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin and the traditional Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah as well as 3 hectares for white wines with Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Clairette and the Marsanne-Roussanne duo. The vineyard of Paul Avril is certified in organic farming and the practices are rigorous with vines as in the cellar of Clos des Papes with manual harvests, a severe sorting of the harvest as well as an ageing in oak lightning from 12 to 15 months.
CLOS DES PAPES, HISTORIC CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE WINES
Clos des Papes produces about 65,000 bottles of Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge and 8000 bottles of Châteauneuf du Pape blanc each year. A production therefore confidential and very sought after, in fact each vintage is up to the expectations with fine, balanced and very intense red wines. Paul Avril’s whites are usually fresh and elegant. We always remain in the correctness and control of the farms, which turn out to be more and more precise over time.
