Première Pierre Rouge brings together several Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs in a Grenache-dominated blend complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and a small proportion of Clairette. The grapes are destemmed before vinification and ageing in foudres, demi-muids and barrels, enhancing the wine's natural richness while preserving balance and fruit purity. Blackberry and ripe cherry mingle with Provençal herbs, floral nuances and a touch of liquorice on a generous, harmonious palate framed by ripe tannins and an elegant finish.
The sommelier info
The nose is vibrant, with black cherry and blackberry notes that gradually give way to violet, fresh thyme, and Provençal herbs. A subtle hint of licorice rounds out this Mediterranean profile without overpowering the fruit.
The palate is full-bodied and enveloping, with juicy fruit and a generous texture supported by ripe, refined tannins. Despite its depth, the 2023 Première Pierre retains a lovely energy and never feels heavy. The finish is long, fruity, and lingering, with a return of floral notes, aromatic herbs, and spices.
This wine is served with
Famille Pierre Usseglio Première Pierre Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red pairs beautifully with slow-cooked thyme lamb shoulder, roast pigeon with rich jus, grilled rib of beef or wild boar stew; serve at around 16 to 18°C and decant for approximately one hour while young to fully reveal its fruit and Provençal herb character.

The domain
Based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils is a family estate whose history began in 1948, when Francis Usseglio settled in the appellation. His son Pierre subsequently developed the domaine, whose story is now being continued by the family's new generation. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other traditional Southern Rhône varieties produce wines combining depth, balance and a strong sense of terroir, both in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and across the family's other appellations.
